At Family Centered Advocacy, our vision is a community where everyone has access to the resources and support they need to thrive. Families play a critical role in the success of their child by providing for them everyday. We work towards this goal by listening to the families priorities, concerns, and needs. A holistic, strength-based philosophy focuses on the entire family system.
I have worked with children, families, and teachers in public schools, charter schools, early intervention, and higher education for over 15 years. I graduated from University of Nevada, Las Vegas with my Ph.D. in special education. My expertise include interventions in academics, behavior, and social skills for children of all ages and legal expertise of IDEA. All of my experience has made me passionate about uplifting families and advocating for children's rights.
At Family Centered Advocacy, we focus on the entire family to help support their child with a disability both through advocacy at school and individualized family supports. The family and child will have supports at schools, in the home, and in the community. Families have access to all services for a year even after the IEP or 504 is completed. Continued support includes advocacy for any additional meetings with school personnel, including any revisions to the IEP, Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and/or manifestation determinations. The family is also continually supported in the home to ensure the child and families needs are met outside of the school day.
Navigating the IEP (Individual Education Program) and Section 504 process to support your child with a disability or suspected disability can be challenging for families. Special education advocacy provides you with support from a special education professional with legal expertise and years of experience working in and with schools.
Parent training is provided to families to help support the family in the home or community. Support your child with evidence-based methods and strategies to help with academic, behavior, social, functional skills, and community access. Individualized plans are created with family priorities to work on skills important for the family's specific situation.
Progress monitoring for students will be provided for the entire year the IEP is active. Ensure the services provided are appropriate and benefitting your child. Families are able to make informed decisions about the progress and benefits of the services. Support provided to change or modify the IEP or BIP if needed.
Assessment and evaluation meetings help determine eligibility and establish present levels for the student. Support in understanding the evaluation process and helping through the multidisciplinary team meetings will be provided. Suspected disabilities may also need evaluations; support navigating the process will be provided.
The goal is always to work with the school and IEP team to provide a collaborative and productive solutions to issues, but it is not always possible to resolve disputes. Mediation and due process are legal options for families to make formal complaints and disagreements. As an expert witness, legal interpretations will be provided during the resolution process including testifying in court.
Each month Family Centered Advocacy offers free virtual information sessions for families, teachers, and caregivers on different special education topics. Community events are also offered throughout the year to encourage families to find fun, activity, and support in the community.
